The fewer the blades, the faster the fan will be able to rotate even at just a low speed, and the less energy it will consume. On the other hand, fans with more blades are quieter and more attractive, though more blades also means you will have more to clean.

Indeed, fan blades require the most cleaning, since they are the largest parts of the fan. This is something you’ll have to do, though, in order to keep the air in the room clean and to keep the fan looking attractive.

Here are some ways to clean your Harbor Breeze fan blades:

1. Use a wet rag. Simply get a rag and spray it, not soak it, with water. Wipe the top of the blades first, from the tips to the arms, then do the same with the bottom, repeating the step for each blade.

2. Use an old pillow case and slip the blade inside it. Rub or wipe both sides of the blade with the cloth then pull the pillow case off. Wipe off any remaing dust with a rag.

3. Use a microfiber cloth which will attract the dust, using it the same way as you would use the rag.

4. Buy a Harbor Breeze blade brush which has a plastic handle that can extend up to 60 inches so you won’t have to reach so far.

5. Buy a U-shaped brush with a long handle so you can brush both the top and bottom of the blades at the same time.

Remember to cover the bed or the dining table first before cleaning the ceiling fan or you’ll end up having to clean these, too, afterwards, and always use a sturdy chair or stepladder that will let you see the top of the blades where most of the dust settle.

To learn more about - Wall switch
- Harbor Breeze remote control

Pull chains are the most commonly used. In fact, most ceiling fans come these attached, particularly a three-speed pull chain that doesn’t just turn the fan on and off but also adjusts its speed to low, medium or high with each pull.

If the ceiling fan comes with a light kit or is light adaptable like most Harbor Breeze fans, it will have two pull chains, one for the fan and one for the light, which can either simply turn the light on and off or adjust the level of brightness.

Pull chains can also add decorative value to a ceiling fan. Those offered by Harbor Breeze, in particular, come in different styles, with a key, a clear gem, a ball or a medallion hanging at the end of the beaded chain.

Even if the ceiling fan comes with pull chains, though, it can still be wired to work with a wall switch, which you can do yourself if you have a lot of experience with wiring.

Harbor Breeze offers two different types of wall controls – a slider type and a push-button type. Both have white finishes like most light switches and operate on 1.25 amps. They also offer both fan and light control, with three different fan speeds to choose from.

Note that the slider type wall control offers more options in terms of light control, since it can dim or brighten the lights in varying degrees and not just turn them on or off.

The last control option is the remote control, which works in the same way as the wall control except that it is a wireless handheld device so you can conveniently control the ceiling fan from where you are seated in the room, sparing you the trouble of reaching up for the pull chain or walking over to the wall switch.

Some Harbor Breeze fans come with the remote included, particularly the larger models like the 60-inch Saratoga and the 54-inch Cambridge. With most, though, you will have to buy a Harbor Breeze remote separately.

There are four types of Harbor Breeze remotes that you can choose from, all of which operate within a range of 40 feet and offer three fan speeds and light dimmer control. One of these even shows the thermostat which can guide you in choosing the speed of the fan most suitable for the room.

Keep in mind that some remotes work only for close-mounted ceiling fans and some work only for flush-mounted ones.

To learn more about <a

After all, it is quite common for ceiling fan pull chains to come out of their sockets when someone pulls on them excessively.

This is not really a cause for concern, though, since pull chains are relatively affordable and easy to replace. Like with other ceiling fan replacement parts, you just have to make sure that the pull chain you get is compatible with your fan, if not the same as the one you are replacing, with the same number of fan speeds and wires. When in doubt, get in touch with your ceiling fan manufacturer.

<span

At the same time, the fan should also be at least seven feet from the floor, which is why there are different ceiling fan mounts available.

The basic types of ceiling fan mounts are:

- Downrod mount – Using this type of mount, the ceiling fan is connected to a metal pole called a downrod, which in turn connects to the canopy in the ceiling. Most ceiling fans come with a standard downrod included, while shorter ones can be purchased separately for close-to-ceiling mounts and longer ones up to 72 inches long for high ceiling installations.

- Flush mount – Flush mount ceiling fans or hugger ceiling fans are connected directly to the canopy so as to occupy the minimal height, ideal for low ceiling installations. Many ceiling fans have both a standard version and a hugger version, since it is better to purchase a hugger fan to begin with than to convert a ceiling fan to a flush mount type, though there are still flush mount kits available.

- Angled or sloped mount – For vaulted or sloped ceilings, an angled or sloped ceiling adapter is required. Like downrods, these are available in various finishes, and also have different degrees of slope.

Keep in mind that some ceiling fans can be mounted using all three ways while others only have dual mounts or can only be mounted in one way, depending on its size and design.

<span

The answer is that light dimmers are able to control the flow of the current, alternately turning it on and off. When the current is turned off, the light is dimmed and when the current is turned on, the light becomes brighter.

Ceiling fan dimmers come in various types. Like common wall switches, they can be either single-pole, meaning they can only be used in one location, or compatible with a three-way configuration. The former is more popular and easier to install.

They can also simply control the ceiling fan lights or control both the lights and the fan itself, particularly the fan speeds, which is convenient so you don’t have to get separate controls for the fan.

Different types of controls are available, as well, including slider controls, rotary dials or knob controls and push buttons.

One thing you have to keep in mind, though, before you even take a look at ceiling fan dimmers, is that these controls only work with ceiling fans that have separately wired light kits, and they cannot be used on remote controlled models either. Before you purchase a dimmer switch, make sure you read the fan’s manual or get in touch with your manufacturer first to ensure that it is compatible with one. Otherwise, the fan can go up in smoke, literally.

If your ceiling fan is compatible with a dimmer switch, installing one should be easy, taking no more than fifteen minutes. Just make sure that there is no current running to the circuit you will be working on – if you are unsure which one it is, it is best to turn off the power supply completely – and then follow the instructions that come with the switch, which should resemble those for installing any other wall switch.

When in doubt, always consult an electrician to do the wiring for you or at least, check your work so as to avoid accidents.

<span

It was during this time that many American ceiling fan companies emerged, including Casablanca, known for introducing ceiling fans as predominantly decorative pieces, Fasco, which manufactured a number of ceiling fans with powerful motors, and the Southern Fan Company, known for its Tara ceiling fan.

<span

Even if you’re not a collector, an antique ceiling fan can add unmistakeable charm and value to any room because of its unique and excellent craftsmanship, while still able to provide good ventilation once repaired and restored properly.

History of Ceiling Fans

In order to correctly identify and purchase antique ceiling fans, it will help to know some basic facts about the history of ceiling fans.

The first ceiling fans were developed in the 1870s at the Tuerk Water Meter Company in the US, a company which James Hunter would later on buy out and mold into the Hunter Fan Company we still know today. These fans had only two blades, used a belt-and-pulley system and were powered by running water.

In 1882, shortly after electricity was invented, the first electric-powered ceiling fan was introduced by Philip Diehl, and by World War I, companies began manufacturing ceiling fans with four blades instead of two, more closely resembling the ceiling fans we see today.

Ceiling fans eventually grew in popularity up to the 1920s but nearly grew extinct during the Great Depression, making its return only in the late 1960s. During this time, ceiling fans also began to be imported from companies in East Asia and American ceiling fan manufacturers were prompted to step up to the competition. The rest, as they say, is history.

Antique Ceiling Fan Brands

The Hunter Fan company remains one of the leaders of the ceiling fan industry and its early models are considered some of the most sought-after antique ceiling fans. The Hunter Original, in particular, is a collector’s favorite.

Other early brands of ceiling fans which are now considered makers of antique models include Emerson, Dayton, Diehl, General Electric and Westinghouse. Emerson, Dayton and Westinghouse, like Hunter, continue to manufacture ceiling fans while General Electric no longer does, and Diehl is no longer in existence.

Belt-Driven Ceiling Fans

As mentioned earlier, the first ceiling fans were belt-driven models, which means that they were connected to an external motor, sometimes located in another room, via a series of belts and pulleys, with the motor able to power several fans at one time.

Today, some belt-driven ceiling fans still exist, although the motors of these are now electric to provide modern convenience. These include fans made by the Woolen Mill Company as well as the Brewmaster and Bourbon Street models from Fanimation.

Buying An Antique Ceiling Fan

Antique ceiling fans are not that easy to find, with many of them sold along with the houses where they were originally installed. Your biggest chance would be to find one in an auction, both on and off the web, and even so, don’t expect it to be in good condition. It will likely still be able to work, but you might have to do some repairs and restoration work on it first.

You can learn more about buying used ceiling fans here.

Antique Ceiling Fan Replicas (antique looking ceiling fans)

Identifying an authentic antique ceiling fan can be a challenging task and often, it is best to leave this to an expert. In general, though, antique ceiling fans have shaded pole motors made of solid brass or copper housed in cast iron, are mounted with a j-hook, and have four blades made of solid wood.

Over the years, ceiling fan companies have also been making replicas of their own earlier designs, which you can consider if you are simply after the look of an antique ceiling fan, and not the history or the unique mechanism.
